Choosing the Right Size for Your Department
Really Useful Boxes are one of those things you'll find on virtually every production in the UK. They're simple, practical and durable enough to handle the demands of daily set life.
Below we've broken down the range by size to help you pick the right box for what you're storing.
Small Boxes
Batteries, lens caps, cleaning cloths, chalk, marker pens and personal tools. Easy to carry one-handed and fit neatly on shelving or inside a larger case.
Medium Boxes
Camera AKS, follow-focus components, gaffer tape bundles, cable management supplies and hand tools. The 35L is one of the most versatile sizes in the range.
Small Boxes: 5L, 9L and 12L
The 5-litre and 9-litre boxes are well suited to individual items or small groupings - batteries, lens caps, cleaning cloths, chalk, or marker pens. The 12-litre box gives you a bit more room and works well for organising rolls of tape, T-markers, or a personal tool kit.
These smaller sizes are easy to carry with one hand and fit neatly on shelving or inside a larger case or bag. They're also useful for keeping items separated within a bigger storage setup.
Medium Boxes: 18L and 35L
The 18-litre box is a good middle ground - large enough for a collection of accessories but still compact enough to carry comfortably. It's a common choice for camera assistants organising follow-focus components, video tap accessories or eyepiece covers.
The 35-litre box is one of the most versatile sizes in the range. It has enough depth and floor space for heavier items like gaffer tape bundles, cable management supplies, or a full set of hand tools. The 35L XL Lid variant is worth considering if you're regularly loading and unloading bulkier items, as the taller lid makes access easier.
Large Boxes: 42L, 48L, 64L and 84L
The 42-litre and 48-litre boxes are among the most popular for on-set use. They can handle a significant volume of kit while still being manageable to lift and carry when loaded. Camera, grip and lighting departments all use these sizes for everything from cable coils to cleaning supplies to spare rigging hardware.
The 64-litre and 84-litre boxes are best suited to static storage - prep rooms, workshops, or shelving in a unit truck where they won't need to be moved frequently when full. They're ideal for bulk consumables, seasonal stock or larger items that don't fit in the mid-range sizes.
Full Size Guide - External and Internal Dimensions
Knowing the external dimensions tells you how much shelf or truck space a box will take up. The internal dimensions tell you whether your kit will actually fit inside. Both matter when you're planning storage for a prep room, racking unit or unit truck, so we've listed both below.
| Size | External (L x W x H mm) | Internal (L x W x H mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Litres | 340 x 200 x 125 | 285 x 160 x 105 |
| 9 Litres | 395 x 255 x 155 | 335 x 210 x 140 |
| 12 Litres | 465 x 270 x 150 | 415 x 235 x 140 |
| 18 Litres | 480 x 390 x 200 | 395 x 335 x 170 |
| 35 Litres | 480 x 390 x 310 | 370 x 310 x 280 |
| 35L XL Lid | 480 x 390 x 355 | 370 x 310 x 315 |
| 42 Litres | 520 x 440 x 310 | 405 x 365 x 280 |
| 48 Litres | 600 x 400 x 310 | 530 x 325 x 289 |
| 64 Litres | 710 x 440 x 310 | 605 x 370 x 280 |
| 84 Litres | 710 x 440 x 380 | 605 x 370 x 355 |
External dimensions include the lid and handles. Internal dimensions reflect the minimum usable space. All dimensions are approximate as stated by the manufacturer. Dimensions sourced from Really Useful Products Ltd.
The 35L and 35L XL Lid share the same length and width - the XL is simply 45mm taller externally, giving an extra 35mm of internal height. The 64L and 84L also share a footprint (710 x 440mm), with the 84L being 70mm taller. This means if you're using racking, you can mix these sizes on the same shelf width.
